Health Club, Community College Reach Agreement

SARANAC LAKE, NY -- North Country (NY) Community College (NCCC) and the Lake Placid (NY) Health and Fitness club have reached a mutual agreement in which the club’s trainers will help train NCCC’s athletes while NCCC will offer Lake Placid members access to its facilities, according to the Adirondack (NY) Daily Enterprise.

The agreement will take into effect Feb. 5.

“It’s going to allow us to expand the number and types of classes and offerings we currently bring our membership,” Hal Schmidt, owner of Lake Placid Health and Fitness, told the newspaper.

Ed Trathen, vice president of enrollment and student affairs at NCCC, told the newspaper that Lake Placid’s trainers will help minimize the number of sports-related injuries of NCCC student-athletes. The agreement also comes at the same time the school was accepted into a more competitive conference, Trathen says.

“It would be unfair for us to put our student-athletes in a more competitive conference without all the resources their fellow athletes at other colleges would have access to,” Trathen told the newspaper.

Some Lake Placid members are not pleased with the agreement, saying that it will take them longer to drive to NCCC to swim in its pool. Lake Placid is shutting down its indoor pool facility in favor of NCCC’s four-lane pool, the newspaper reported.
